There are many things to pay attention to while driving, from road signs and orange lane markings on highways to other vehicles. Some are very simple and obvious—like the markings you almost certainly saw when you took your driving test as a teenager—but others are less common and not everyone knows about them. For example, sometimes you’ll see yellow median barriers on the road.
You’re likely to see these yellow temporary lane markings—they look a bit like plastic stickers—on roads that are currently under or have been under construction. These markings serve as temporary lane markings on roads that haven’t yet been fully repaired, replacing traditional paint markings. The California Department of Transportation’s Office of Engineering and Design (SCDTDES) states that these markings can be used for “temporary pavement markings during asphalt sealcoating operations.” In California, these yellow markings are only used for short periods, while other temporary lane markings, such as raised yellow dots, are used for long-term road repairs.
Seeing so many roads under construction and confusing route changes can be overwhelming, but at least you know they’re being built. Road conditions in some US states are better than others, though there are many roads in need of repair across the country.
