As part of an ongoing runway refurbishment project, Guernsey Airport will see the runway markings, which provide an important visual reference for pilots, updated in the coming weeks.
To avoid disruption to flight schedules, painting will be carried out at night for the next three weeks.
Guernsey Airport’s runways have various markings and numbers used to convey important navigational and landing information to pilots. These markings and numbers will be updated with durable, highly reflective paint suitable for airport runways, providing a high contrast with the underlying surface.
• Two numbers at each end of the runway, 09 and 27. These numbers represent coordinates (090 degrees and 270 degrees) that indicate to the pilot the orientation of the runway relative to the direction of approach.
• Centerline: The white stripe in the center of the runway helps pilots properly align the aircraft during takeoff and landing.
• Threshold markers: Piano key-shaped markers indicate the initial positions of the safe landing area and takeoff area.
• Aiming point. Wide white stripes on either side of the centerline serve as a visual aiming point for a descending, landing aircraft.
During the construction period, particularly in the coming week, noise levels will increase as surfaces will need to be cleaned for painting. The Port of Guernsey Authority sincerely apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and will strive to minimise the impact to ensure the successful completion of the project.
This marks the next stage of the necessary renovation and preventative maintenance of the grounds and equipment at Guernsey Airport. Earlier this year, the airport completed a necessary upgrade to its aviation ground lighting (AGL) system, replacing equipment that was nearing the end of its service life.
Airlines and other stakeholders were notified in advance of the upcoming construction work, during which the airport will be completely closed overnight. Airport operating hours will not be extended during the construction period, but medical evacuation services will continue as usual.
