The government has reminded drivers to review the meaning of road signs, but many still seem confused about some symbols. The official government publication, “Understanding Road Signs,” runs 172 pages, so it’s no surprise that many signs remain confusing to road users. Social media has become a popular place for drivers to seek explanations of road signs.
This sign is very common in the UK, meaning you’ve likely seen it—in fact, one Reddit user, when asked about its meaning, bluntly stated, “This is one of the most basic signs every driver in the UK should know. Not knowing what this sign means or how to read it is simply negligence.” Another user commented, “What kind of driving qualification is it if a driver doesn’t know what this sign means?”
Despite this common reaction, you may not fully understand what it means. The sign is a red circle on a blue background with a red diagonal cross inside. While many drivers recognize it, not everyone fully understands its meaning.
According to insurance experts at One Sure Insurance, confusion with road signs is far more common than most people realize. Meanwhile, the Daily Record reports that research from the British Automobile Association (AA) shows that while the vast majority of drivers consider themselves safe on the road, approximately half admit they have difficulty understanding some parts of the Highway Code. This ignorance can lead to drivers inadvertently breaking the rules or misreading signs while driving.
A sign in the form of a red and blue cross indicates that this section of the road is a no-parking zone, and parking is prohibited at all times. Unlike other restrictions that apply only during specific periods, no-parking zones prohibit parking for any reason, except in emergency situations.
The UK government’s official guidance states: “A red cross sign means no parking, no boarding, and no alighting. This sign is used to indicate areas where parking is prohibited 24 hours a day (usually on rural roads) or may be used in conjunction with other ‘No Parking’ signs (e.g., the ‘No Parking except for local buses’ sign at bus stops).”
In 24-hour restricted traffic zones, parking is prohibited on main traffic lanes, motorway exits, and in acceleration and deceleration zones. Unless otherwise indicated by signs, you may park in roadside parking spaces. There are no special road markings in 24-hour restricted traffic zones, but small repeating signs may be placed along the road at regular intervals to remind drivers to obey traffic rules.
Since parking is completely prohibited, any driver who parks in a no-parking zone may be fined or receive a penalty notice.
However, confusion surrounding this sign may also stem from its striking similarity to other blue and red road signs common throughout the UK, which have slightly different meanings. For example, one sign, depicting a red line intersecting a blue circle, means “road, no entry.”
Restricted access zones operate similarly to standard restricted access zones, but with additional conditions. These signs typically include additional information, such as the specific time and date the restriction takes effect.
Failure to understand the difference between them can lead to a driver believing they are parking legally when in fact they are breaking the rules.
On congested roads, such as major highways or busy roads leading into city centres, parking can cause congestion or be dangerous, so no-parking zones are often introduced.
By prohibiting complete stops of vehicles, authorities aim to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow and minimize the risk of sudden braking or congestion.
For those unsure of the meaning of road signs, experts recommend familiarizing themselves with the Road Traffic Regulations to ensure a full understanding of their provisions—especially since misunderstandings can lead to fines or dangerous situations on the road. They note that familiarizing themselves with road signs helps drivers avoid fines, accidents, and insurance claims.
A representative from One Sure Insurance commented on the situation: “We see that many accidents or traffic violations occur because drivers simply do not understand or recognize certain road signs.”
”These mistakes may seem minor at first glance, but they can lead to fines, insurance claims, and, in the worst case, even serious accidents. So, be sure to take the time to study every road sign you encounter.”
