As part of measures to ensure road safety, traffic controllers and police are increasing patrols at road construction sites.
The Guernsey government said Operation Columbia, launched in April, aims to raise awareness of the dangers of ignoring road closure signs on the island.
Authorities say people ignored road closure signs, moved roadblocks, drove around obstacles, and tried to squeeze past construction workers, nearly causing serious accidents.
The statement also noted that police officers would patrol the area, especially during peak hours, to deter unsafe behavior and issue fines where necessary.
Chris Dragon, the Department of Transport and Highways’ traffic officer, said the temporary signs are not optional; they are there to assist contractors at road construction sites.
Roads Policing Officer Andy Smith added that officers had seen many people taking “unnecessary risks” by driving onto closed roads because they thought they could “get through without any problems.”
Smith added: “This is not a valid reason and has led to several near misses in the past involving contractors during road construction.”
”If you absolutely must enter the area within the restricted area, please proceed slowly and follow staff directions. This is for the safety of all visitors.”
