Seoul Tests High Reflective Glass Beads for Road Markings on Olympic-daero

  • Utilization of rainproof glass beads to improve lane visibility by reflecting headlights, even when submerged in rainwater
  • Confirmation of resurfacing and repainting of faded road markings on Olympic-daero after thorough review

The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced its plans to implement and evaluate high reflective glass beads for road markings on select sections of Olympic-daero. This aims to improve lane visibility during rainy conditions, providing a safer driving environment for motorists.

Conventionally, road marking paint includes glass beads to reflect vehicle headlights and improve visibility. This year, the city government plans to utilize high reflective glass beads that are rainproof and about twice the size of standard glass beads to effectively reflect more light, maintaining high visibility even when submerged in rainwater.

The city will pilot and verify the performance of the resurfaced and repainted road markings on Olympic-daero. As the longest expressway in Seoul, Olympic-daero serves as an ideal testing ground with high-speed traffic while its extensive length allows for thorough assessments of lane durability and visibility.

The city will conduct a one-year quality evaluation and analysis through the end of the year. Surveys, interviews, and other methods will be used to gather feedback on the perceived effectiveness from actual road users.
