Road glass microbeads belong to special traffic safety materials, and all cross-border engineering projects and exported products must comply with unified international industry standards. Different countries and regions have clear mandatory regulations on microbead refractive index, particle size, sphericity, purity and weather resistance. Understanding international certification standards is the key for engineering enterprises and suppliers to carry out global road business and ensure project acceptance qualification.
First, the global universal standard is ASTM D2495 (Standard Specification for Glass Beads for Traffic Markings) in the United States. This standard divides road glass microbeads into Type A and Type B, specifying the core parameters such as 1.50-1.53 standard refractive index, particle size range of 100-850μm, and sphericity ≥70%. It is the most widely recognized standard in North America, Southeast Asia, Africa and other regions, and is the basic certification for most international road bidding projects.
Second, the European standard EN 1423 is mandatory for EU road engineering. This standard puts forward higher requirements for microbead purity and anti-fouling performance, requiring no internal bubbles, no impurity pollution, and the adhesion rate of coated microbeads ≥95%. EN 1423 certified glass microbeads are applicable to all EU member states’ highway, urban road and traffic facility construction projects, with strict quality traceability system.
In addition, China’s GB/T 24717-2020 national standard is aligned with international advanced standards, covering classification, technical requirements, test methods and inspection rules of road glass microbeads. Products that meet this standard can not only be used in domestic engineering, but also pass the entry inspection of most countries in the world, with high international universality.
In terms of key compliance parameters, international standards uniformly stipulate the core indicators of qualified products. The refractive index of conventional road microbeads is stable at 1.5±0.02, high refractive index products reach 1.9±0.05; the sphericity of qualified microbeads is not less than 70%, and high-quality products reach more than 85%; the impurity content is strictly controlled below 1%, ensuring stable optical performance. At the same time, all export glass microbeads must pass environmental protection and non-toxic testing to meet EU RoHS and global traffic material environmental protection requirements.
For overseas engineering contractors and material suppliers, choosing internationally certified road glass microbeads can effectively avoid project unqualified acceptance, customs clearance obstacles and quality disputes. Standard-compliant microbeads are not only the guarantee of road engineering quality, but also the core credential for long-term layout of the global traffic material market.
