In actual road engineering applications, many construction teams and project owners often encounter various quality problems with road glass microbeads, including poor reflection brightness, massive falling off, uneven dispersion and rapid failure after rain. These issues not only affect road traffic safety but also increase repeated maintenance costs. Understanding the common faults, root causes and targeted solutions of glass microbeads is essential for long-term stable operation of road markings.
The first most common problem is low retroreflective brightness and dim night vision. The main causes include unqualified microbead refractive index, excessive internal impurities and irregular spherical shape, which damage the retroreflection optical effect. In addition, excessive embedding depth during construction, thick paint coverage and insufficient microbead exposure area will also lead to poor light reflection. For this problem, the fundamental solution is to select standard high-refractive-index microbeads with high sphericity. During construction, strictly control the embedding proportion of 50%-60%, and avoid excessive paint thickness covering the microbead surface.
The second frequent fault is microbead falling off and peeling in a short time. Poor adhesion is the core reason. Uncoated ordinary microbeads have weak binding force with marking paint; meanwhile, construction in dusty, humid or low-temperature environments will cause poor fusion between microbeads and paint layer. In addition, early road opening and vehicle rolling before paint curing will also lead to large-area shedding. The solution is to prioritize coated adhesive glass microbeads, clean and dry the road surface before construction, and strictly follow the curing cycle to open traffic after the paint is completely dry.
Thirdly, uneven microbead distribution and mottled marking reflection often occur. This problem is mainly caused by manual uneven scattering in drop-on construction or insufficient stirring in pre-mixed process. Too fast or too slow construction speed will also lead to inconsistent microbead density in different areas. The optimized solution is to use professional automatic microbead scattering equipment to ensure uniform spraying speed. For pre-mixed construction, extend the uniform stirring time and check the dispersion state before formal construction to ensure no microbead agglomeration.
Fourth, rapid reflection failure after rainy and snowy weather. Ordinary low-quality glass microbeads have poor water resistance and weather resistance. After being soaked in rainwater and covered with snow, the surface is prone to fogging and turbidity, losing optical reflection performance. High-quality modified glass microbeads have waterproof and anti-fouling coating on the surface, which can effectively resist rainwater erosion and dust adhesion. Regular cleaning of road marking surfaces can also effectively extend the service life of reflective effects.
Through targeted prevention and treatment of the above common problems, the service life and reflective stability of road glass microbeads can be maximized, reducing engineering maintenance costs and ensuring long-term road traffic safety.
