In the city of Montgomery, USA, unusual road markings are used to effectively reduce speed in residential areas.
With speeding complaints on the rise in a residential area of Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania, city officials are taking emergency speed-reduction measures.
Since early April 2025, the road and the center line of Gray Lane in Montgomery Township have been covered in wavy lines. The new route is intended to encourage drivers to slow down. Residents were apparently not informed of the measure in advance. The timing was so opportune that many thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Others suspect that drunk road workers are behind the scribbles. Of course, the wavy lines can easily get run over by cars, but those responsible hope that it will have a psychological effect and thus slow down traffic.
Additional speed limit signs have been installed and police have also stepped up radar surveillance. However, traffic on this popular shortcut through residential areas cannot be reduced or slowed permanently. City officials explained that local conditions make it impossible to use traditional speed bumps. If the wave lines do not produce the desired effect, traffic on the affected streets will be restricted, and bollards will be installed along the roadway and measures will be taken to strengthen the structures.
