The Indian reflective tape market was valued at USD 280.7 million in 2022 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 2.4% during 2023-30. Growing demand for high-visibility reflective tapes used to enhance safety at workplaces and on roads is fueling the demand in India. Rising road accidents have increased the demand for high-visibility reflective tapes as an accident prevention and road safety product. According to a report published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India, 412,432 road accidents occurred in 2021, resulting in 153,972 deaths and 384,448 injuries. Additionally, the growing importance of employee safety at workplaces will fuel the market growth during the forecast period.
The Government of India has introduced a specific regulatory framework to regulate the use of reflective materials, including reflective tape, on the exterior of vehicles. For example, in April 2023, the Mumbai Regional Transport Authority (RTO) took action against over 100 buses of Bombay Electricity Supply and Transport Company (BEST) for violating reflective tape laws. The government took action against BEST buses for concealing reflective tape under advertisements.
Regulations have been enacted to improve visibility at night and in adverse weather conditions, thereby reducing road accidents. For example, in January 2022, the Gautam Buddha Nagar traffic police in Noida launched a campaign to place reflective tape on vehicles, roadblocks and poles to reduce accidents in adverse weather conditions. These reflective tapes are designed to improve visibility at night and in low-light conditions. They play a vital role in alerting oncoming drivers of faulty tail lights.
Reflective tape, made of closely spaced glass beads and microprisms coated with a thin aluminum film, illuminates objects in the dark. This reflective property makes it easy to use in clothing such as protective suits, life jackets, gloves, and hard hats, driving market demand. Growing concerns about the safety of employees in the workplace, including police officers directing traffic in rainy weather and workers working on sidewalks and roadsides, are likely to drive demand for reflective clothing.
Moreover, the growing demand for reflective fabrics and apparels is expected to drive the market expansion in the coming years. However, the number of vendors in the Indian market is very limited. The production of these products is subject to numerous constraints such as volatile raw material prices, product regulations, and high R&D costs, which in turn hinders the growth of the market.
The engineering grade glass bead reflective tape segment contributed the largest revenue share in 2022 at 33.3% and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.8% during the forecast period. This product is a metallized film with glass beads applied underneath. More than 50% of the glass beads are embedded in the metallized layer, forming a dotted structure with reflective properties.
The demand for non-metallized microprismatic reflective tape is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.3% during the forecast period. Its application in road barriers, construction sites, traffic signs, rollers and cones, as well as its durability, is expected to drive growth in this segment. SWICOFIL has commercialized the microprism and glass bead reflective technology. This technology uses glass beads and microprisms to reflect incident light back to the source.
Metallized microprismatic films have the highest production costs. In addition, the requirements for the production process of these films are more stringent than for other types of tapes. However, the metallized treatment provides higher reflectivity and can be used for vehicle marking, which stimulates demand for these tapes.
The construction industry accounted for the largest share of revenue in 2022 (41.5%) and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.0% during the forecast period. The use of reflective tapes in construction sites and industrial plants is expected to drive demand for the product due to stricter government regulations on pedestrian and worker safety.
For example, in October 2021, the Government of India launched the National Master Plan (Gati Shakti) that will comprehensively and holistically guide the development of national infrastructure while creating significant employment opportunities. The Gati Shakti plan includes 81 high-impact projects, with road infrastructure projects being a priority. The plan is also expected to boost the demand for reflective tapes in the coming years.
The growth of the Indian reflective tape market is also driven by the increasing use of these products for ensuring the safety of construction workers. Additionally, these tapes are designed for use in areas that require excellent visual impact, especially in potentially hazardous areas. They are also widely used in the automotive industry, road safety, traffic management, and personal protective equipment and clothing industries.
Growing traffic problems in the country and rising number of road accidents are leading to a surge in demand for auto products such as bodywork, paintwork and bumper repairs. Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) have issued guidelines requiring the use of reflective tape that glows at night in foggy conditions to prevent accidents. These tapes are applied to the front and rear of vehicles.
The apparel industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.6% during the forecast period. Key applications include silver, elastic, and flame-retardant garments with reflective materials. These garments are made from base fabrics, micro glass beads, and adhesives using various processing technologies such as lamination, coating, and heat pressing. These accessories help in monitoring and preventing emergencies, accidents, and evacuations.
The industry is very competitive as there are only a few leading companies in India. These companies compete on the basis of cutting-edge technological innovation and product development. Reflective tape is distributed in India through various channels. The manufacturing companies sell it directly or through local distributors. Some distributors in the value chain are private sellers who purchase the products from the manufacturing companies.
