No matter how long you drive, there will always be some symbols or road markings that you don’t know the meaning of.
Many drivers, even after many years of driving, only know the meaning of certain road markings. Some even think that they mean something completely different.
The news came when driving instructor Annie Winterburn, owner of Spot On Driving, uploaded a video to TikTok in the hopes of educating others about road markings – a common topic in theory tests.
In a recent video, she said that “a lot of people get confused” by a certain road marking — two lines on the curb. Anne explained what they meant: “Yellow lines on the road mean you can’t wait. Waiting is the same as stopping. So when you see two yellow lines on the road, you can stop to drop someone off or pick someone up, but you’re not allowed to wait there. You’re also not allowed to stop there.”
Anne explained that if the line is red, it means no parking. “This route will be red. It will go through somewhere like London or Birmingham,” she added.
But the lines on the curbs are confusing because they are not intended for drivers at all. “They are intended for people making deliveries. They are loading lines. So people who want to stop to make a delivery or pick something up,” explained the professional driver.
According to the Road Traffic Regulations, two lines on the curb mean “Loading and unloading prohibited at all times” and one line means “Loading and unloading prohibited at specified times.”
Many people don’t realise that car drivers don’t need to pay attention to this. One person wrote: “Great. I thought this was for car drivers… thanks for clarifying.” Another added: “This is always helpful. I’ve been driving for 40 years and I’m still learning the theory.”
