The Australian Government is rolling out a $245 million road safety package that includes a range of innovative technologies designed to keep not only drivers but cyclists and pedestrians safe too.
The most interesting aspect of this project is the use of photoluminescent road markings that glow in the dark. Like those plastic stars you hung on your bedroom ceiling as a child, these road markings look completely normal during the day, but when night falls, they become as bright as stars.
Victoria claims that the innovation will help drivers “more clearly assess the situation at intersections and turns” and will significantly reduce reaction time to road conditions ahead.
Victoria-based Tarmac Linemarking posted photos of a trial run of glow-in-the-dark road markings on its Facebook page, showing impressive results. Even in complete darkness, the lines on the road are clearly visible thanks to the special coating.
Tarmac Linemarking claims the new technology will be “an excellent product for sidewalks, bike paths, roads, boat ramps and many other applications.”
This will help not only drivers at night to follow the markings, but also cyclists and pedestrians. We hope this idea will catch on and be implemented in other parts of the world, as we believe that there are no downsides to more visible markings.
In addition to photoluminescent road markings, the government will also introduce LED sidewalk lighting near intersections and other more reflective road markings.
