Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have been on the same page in interviews and at awards shows for months, and they saved their stunning choices for the Oscars.
After months of rehearsing their outfits, Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo hit the Oscars red carpet in the signature colors of their Oz characters.
For Grande, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, that meant wearing an icy pink satin and tulle sheath by Schiaparelli, covered in more than 190,000 crystal sequins, rhinestones, and beads. The flowing waistline was inspired by a lamp created by artist Alberto Giacometti.
Erivo, who was nominated for best actress, chose a deep forest green so dark it was almost black at first glance. But there’s no doubt the subtle homage was intentional. In an interview with E! on the red carpet, she said the velvet Louis Vuitton gown with its almost vampiric architectural neckline was “an homage to Oz, an homage to the color green, and an homage to old Hollywood.” Her signature nails, designed by manicurist Mika Dior, feature intricate hand-gilded artwork, including a miniature clock.
During the promotional tour for “Wicked,” both leads appeared several times in outfits that matched their characters. At the Los Angeles premiere, Ms. Grande wore a pink plaid dress by Thom Browne, and Ms. Erivo wore a green vinyl dress by Louis Vuitton.
Even at events not officially related to the film, the two still made sure to perform, like at the Paris Olympics, where they both wore… well, you know.
The second Wicked movie is set to hit theaters later this year. We’ll have to wait and see if the duo will continue to release pink and green versions in November.
